Teacher Workshops

Training Program

Was your past summer vacation less than exciting? If so, picture yourself spending 3 days of next summer's break on the Texas Coast engaged in a professional development short course focused on marine sciences.

This five-day training program, co-sponsored by Texas A&M University’s Marine Advisory Service and the Upper Coast Waterborne Education Center, is a combination of outdoor and indoor instruction designed to strengthen your confidence and competence in approaching complex science-related topics with your students. It also introduces economics and social activities dependant upon these “salty” sciences.

This workshop will take place in three separate coastal locations: ANAHUAC - The Watershed Transition Zone of Trinity/Galveston Bay

GALVESTON - The Recreation and Tourisn Heartbeat of the Texas Coast

MATAGORDA - Bountiful Bays, Beaches and Birds.

Activities

  • Professionally-guided field learning experiences aboard the 57-foot R.V. Karma
  • Kayaking in the wetlands
  • Combing the beach and dunes in search of teaching aids
  • Hands-on labs and demonstrations related to the biology, ecology, geology, meteorology, physics, and chemistry of coastal waters and shores

Activities can be easily transferred to your classroom since the training is coupled with take-home teaching kits.

Date

  • June 2-6

You will come away with...

  • A much expanded understanding and appreciation of marine science
  • A teaching kit with equipment and reference materials that will enable you to immediately incorporate marine-oriented science activities into your curriculum
  • A network of like-minded colleagues and university faculty members to support your on-going ambitions to elevate your students' performance in science, math, and technology
